REL 33500: Christianity, Ethics, and Modern Society (Lindenwood University)
This course serves as an introduction to Christian ideals of moral conduct and formation, community life, and disputes over the interpretation and application of these ideals. The course takes up questions such as: what do Christian beliefs and moral concepts imply about issues related to feminism, racism, economic practices, and religious pluralism? Are traditional Christian virtues and principles at odds with modern liberal democracy and its values rooted in postenlightenment concepts of human rights, equality, and freedom? The first part of the course will cover the history of Christian ethics. In the second part, emphasis will be placed on a series of case studies covering contemporary social, political, and economic problems such as: marriage, homosexuality, abortion, bioethics, capital punishment, just war, the environmental crisis, and religion in the public square.

[Would you recommend this instructor to another student?] Absolutely! Dr. Plaxco became one of my favorite professors this semester. His care for both his students' wellbeing as well as their growth in knowledge surpasses many others I have had as instructors. Each class was thought-provoking and facilitated healthy class discussion (and sometimes debates!) Students who are looking for more than a boring, easy A should take his classes to expand their understanding and open their minds about religion, philosophy, and ethics.
I have honestly looked forward to this class every week more than any other class I have had. I wish we could continue going through the articles and ethical questions. Thank you so much for creating such an amazing class!
